Lent: Pause! Be Still! Be Silent!
By Wendy Kachermeyer
Director of Religious Education
We are in the center of our desert journey with our Savior and Love, Jesus. We walk in the silence of our hearts with Him whom we love above all. We stop, look back and reflect on each step we have taken. We recognize the times we have stumbled over sinful moments and rejoice in our sorrow for those moments. We are living in the desert that is filled with the love, hope and mercy of Christ.
Reflection:
Close your eyes and imagine being in the middle of the desert. You’re alone and everywhere you look it is nothing but barren sand. You’re sizzling and seeing the heat coming off the sand makes it feel scorching hot. The air is still and heavy, there aren’t any birds singing or animals howling, you are alone, Off in the distance you see something and decide to go towards it and as you get closer a shape starts to appear. Your mind goes a little wild thinking about what it can be so you move a little faster. The shape is in focus and it is a well with a man sitting along the side, You can’t see his face but you are very excited just to see a place to quench your thirst. When you finally arrive at the well there is nothing to retrieve the water with and you have to ask the man if he had bucket to acquire water, then you see who it is. He smiles and says in a gentle loving voice, “I am the living water”, He embraces you and your thirst is quenched.
Our dear Jesus is in the midst of Lent. He is why we need this time of year. It helps us to reflect on our
stumbling moments and it gives us strength to remove or repair that part of us that isn’t in line with
what Jesus wants for us. Cling to Him in every aspect of your Lent and everyday life. Depend on Him to guide and hold you up when you don’t think you can make it to the end. As Lent continues to grow
closer to an end take time and just be with Jesus at the well of life. Recall your Baptism into this Holy
Catholic Church. Be still and silent and listen for His voice encouraging you to stay with Him.
